This latest SWaP (size, weight & power) IR detector gives greater autonomy to handheld devices and battery powered equipment
Lynred, a global provider of high-quality infrared detectors for the aerospace, defence and commercial markets has launched the Galatea MW, a compact and low power consumption infrared (IR) detector whose SWaP (Size, Weight and Power) design enhances the autonomy and performance of battery-powered devices.
Galatea MW optimises the balance between performance and miniaturisation. It is well suited for defence and surveillance applications such as Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), Unmanned Ground Vehicles (UGVs) and tactical infantry, such as Thermal Weapon Sights or Handheld Thermal Imaging (HHTI) equipment where payload or mobility along with miniaturisation, battery life and weight are critical. As military tactical HHTI are becoming increasingly central to achieving strategic objectives in field operations, there is an essential need for this equipment to be reliable and optimised for power management. Easily portable equipment is also key to enhancing soldier mobility.

To enable an overall reduction in equipment payload and a gain in mission autonomy, the Galatea, a cooled 15-micron mid-wavelength IR detector, has been optimised in three key areas:
- Low power consumption < 3 DC watts to reduce battery size and lower its weight
- Lightweight < 230g to improve portability and mobility
- Equivalent volume ~230cm³ (~96x50x48 mm) to ease integration and improve ergonomics
