SAP has announced its $2 billion investment plan over five years to accelerate the Internet of things (IoT) worldwide. The firm has bought IoT software developer Plat.One as a start of its IoT innovation plan.
SAP Announces €2 Billion Investment Plan, New Innovations, Acquisitions and Network of SAP IoT Labs to Unlock Next Wave of Value from the Internet of Things

As part of its plan, SAP announced the following IoT initiatives:-
- The company said it is rolling out Industry 4.0 packages to enable customers’ digital business strategies. These include a series of “jump-start” and “accelerator” IoT software packages. SAP also plans IoT package solutions to address the unique digital operations of cities, agriculture and energy industries.
- The company is launching a new product called SAP IoT, which will leverage SAP’s existing HANA platform and aims to make sense of Big Data from the multitude of IoT devices and apply machine learning.
- As part of its IoT initiatives, SAP also plans to acquire new businesses. SAP has already acquired PLAT.ONE and Fedem Technology which will be integrated into SAP HANA. PLAT.ONE will be integrated into HANA to add key IoT capabilities, including IoT device lifecycle management & connectivity, edge computing, and security. Fedem Technology’s analytics platform will be used to improve HANA’s analytics capabilities.
- SAP will be opening IoT labs around the world to collaborate on Industry 4.0 and the IoT with customers, partners and startups. Planned locations include Berlin, Johannesburg, Munich, Palo Alto, São Leopoldo and Shanghai. The labs are intended to provide customers with access to experts, workshops, and interactive demos of IoT technology including autonomous systems (such as drones and robotics), IoT security, machine learning and 3D printing.
