Three-Phase Driver IC Enables Advanced Motor Control Applications

Delivers high power density and improves overall system efficiency while offering protection against fault conditions

Consumer and industrial application equipment, such as cordless power tools and service robots demand cutting-edge, reliable, cost and energy-efficient motor control solutions, besides optimal power consumption that meet the highest safety standards.

To address these needs and enable the next generation of innovative and high-performance battery-powered products, Infineon Technologies AG has expanded its EiceDRIVER product portfolio of three-phase gate driver ICs with the 6EDL7141. The fully programmable solution is packaged in a 48-pin VQFN with a 7×7 mm2 footprint, delivering high power density and improving overall system efficiency for advanced motor control applications.

It features an SPI interface for gate drive outputs configuration, an integrated power supply and dual charge pumps to supply all system functions. It has an operating voltage ranging from 5.5 to 60 V and a configurable driving current up to 1.5 A, which can effectively drive a wide range of MOSFETs that fit the application.

The 6EDL7141 has an adjustable gate driver supply voltage setting between 7 V, 10 V, 12 V and 15 V. Thanks to built-in dual charge pumps, gate drive is maintained even at low battery voltage. Additionally, the smart driver is equipped with an adjustable gate drive configuration with several current levels and timing options for controlling the slew rate and minimising the system electromagnetic interference (EMI). All of the 6EDL7141 settings can be easily changed with the available GUI.

Along with the above, the 6EDL7141 provides the following protection features for a high level of system reliability against fault conditions:

  • Over-Current Protection (OCP), at shunt or RDS(on), DVDD LDO OCP, buck converter OCP (PCMC)
  • Under-Voltage Lockout (UVLO) on PVDD, gate driver supply, DVDD LDO
  • Temperature warning and shutdown
  • Configurable watchdog
  • Rotor locked detection based on hall sensor inputs
  • Memory fault

The EiceDRIVER 6EDL7141 motor control three-phase gate driver IC is now available in a 7×7 mm2 VQFN 48 pin package.
