The new investment will support advanced image sensors, integrated computing and machine vision applications while expanding commercial activity across medical, industrial and physical AI markets worldwide.
Singular Photonics, a developer of SPAD-based (single photon avalanche diode) image sensors, has closed a $2.15 million funding round to support its next phase of growth. The Edinburgh-based company said the investment will help launch a new generation of SPAD image sensors with integrated computing for machine vision, medical imaging, industrial automation and physical AI.
The funding round was led by ACF Investors, with participation from Wren Capital, Cambridge Angels, Scottish Enterprise, Quantum Exponential and Old College Capital. The company also highlighted strong commercial momentum, saying it had already doubled its 2025 sales in 2026 to date and was approaching break-even.
Singular Photonics said its new sensors will incorporate on-chip computation, allowing image processing capabilities to be integrated closer to the point of sensing. The approach is intended to provide developers with greater access to information captured by individual photons, supporting applications where conventional imaging technologies may be limited.
SPAD sensors differ from conventional image sensors by detecting and timing individual photons rather than primarily measuring overall light intensity. Singular Photonics believes this capability can enable imaging systems to capture information that conventional cameras cannot readily see.
The company said its sensor portfolio has continued to expand as customers provide feedback on the features required in future products. It expects the latest funding to accelerate development and bring additional capabilities to market more quickly.
Alongside the funding announcement, Singular Photonics appointed Dr Dipesh Patel, a former CTO of Arm, to its board of directors. Patel brings experience from more than two decades at Arm, including senior technology and management roles.
The developments reflect growing interest in SPAD technology as sensing moves towards faster, more intelligent image capture and processing.
