Modular Test Instrument Simplifies Circuit Debugging

A programmable electronics testing platform combines signal measurement, logic analysis, and waveform generation, with expandable modules for customised testing and prototyping.

Picotronix is a modular mixed-signal test instrument designed to help electronics engineers measure signals, analyse digital circuits, and generate waveforms using a single platform. Developed by Thort Werx Pty Ltd, it combines oscilloscope and logic analyser functions with a frequency meter, while allowing users add measurement capabilities through plug-in modules called picoPods.

The instrument is built around Raspberry Pi Pico 2 microcontrollers and features a colour display for viewing captured signals. Its main module supports analogue signal measurement and digital logic analysis, making it suitable for embedded-system debugging, circuit testing, electronics education, and hardware prototyping.

It uses the RP2350 microcontroller’s built-in analogue-to-digital converter (ADC) for basic signal capture. For faster measurements, the optional ADC-100 picoPod adds dedicated converters, enabling the instrument to capture signals at higher sampling rates. This helps developers examine changing waveforms and investigate circuit behaviour during testing.

The picoPod modules extend the instrument’s capabilities without requiring users to purchase separate equipment for every task. Available options include analogue input modules, differential measurement support, a logic state analyser, and the Wave-05 waveform generator.

The key features are:

  • Modular architecture with interchangeable picoPods.
  • MicroPython-based programming support.
  • Integrated colour display for waveform viewing.
  • Optional high-speed ADC expansion module.
  • Picogram protocol for communication with external devices.

The waveform generator produces test signals with programmable voltage offsets, allowing developers to evaluate circuit responses. Logic analysis modules support different digital logic voltage levels, helping engineers work with a range of electronic interfaces.

It supports MicroPython, enabling users to develop custom virtual instruments and design their own expansion modules. This open approach gives engineers and electronics enthusiasts flexibility to adapt the platform to specific measurement requirements. The instrument can also communicate with computers and phones through its Picogram protocol. AI-assisted features are under development, with the proposed functionality including analysing captured signals and suggesting subsequent test points. Picotronix is preparing for a Kickstarter launch. Its modular architecture and programmable design make it a flexible test platform for developers working on circuit debugging, embedded development, and electronics experimentation.
