A platform combines navigation sensors and artificial intelligence to help developers build systems that work when satellite signals are unavailable.

Inertial Labs, a VIAVI Solutions company, has launched the INS-NV, a programmable development platform that combines an inertial navigation system (INS), an attitude and heading reference system (AHRS), and an NVIDIA Jetson Orin NX module.
The platform is designed to run machine vision and navigation algorithms for alternative positioning, navigation, and timing (Alt-PNT) systems. Its edge artificial intelligence processor helps developers integrate navigation hardware and software, reducing development time.
The INS-NV supports real-time navigation and sensor fusion systems for environments where global navigation satellite system (GNSS) signals are unavailable or disrupted. It uses Inertial Labs’ sensor data, sensor fusion filters, calibration software, and navigation algorithms to provide measurements of time, position, velocity, and attitude.
The platform integrates calibrated tactical-grade microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) accelerometers and gyroscopes, a barometric altimeter, magnetometers, and a multi-constellation GNSS receiver. The receiver supports GPS, QZSS, GLONASS, Galileo, BeiDou, and NavIC. The INS-NV also supports expansion by integrating additional Inertial Labs sensor modules and commercially available vision cameras.
“Visual navigation needs continuous information about vehicle position, orientation and time. Because these systems have traditionally lacked a high-end processor, developers have to spend considerable R&D time and budget to integrate their software with the INS, and that’s before they build a platform,” said Jamie Marraccini, Vice President, Inertial Labs Products, VIAVI. “The advanced sensor fusion addresses this challenge, enabling developers to run their own visual navigation stacks alongside our INS and AHRS technologies, and more quickly create advanced alternative navigation and PNT systems.”
