Indoor 3D Security LiDAR Optimised for Short-Range Applications

A 3D sensor detects intrusions, identifies reach-through attempts, triggers alarms, and monitors indoor areas without recording faces or personal information.

Blickfeld has introduced QbProtect S, a three-dimensional light detection and ranging (3D LiDAR) sensor for indoor security applications. It complements the company’s QbProtect sensor, which is designed for perimeter protection, and detects security events in indoor areas with centimetre-level accuracy.

The sensor is designed to protect valuable assets and restricted areas in museums, data centres, banks, and premium residential properties. It generates high-resolution 3D point clouds with up to 1,200 scan lines, allowing users to define security zones within a monitored area. Designed for short-range applications, it detects objects at distances of up to 35 metres based on their size and direction of movement. It can also detect reach-through attempts, such as a hand entering a protected area, at distances of up to 25 metres and trigger alarms.

The QbProtect S is designed for installation in indoor spaces where security equipment needs to blend with the surroundings. It has a compact housing, with a white version available, and operates with low noise. Power over Ethernet (PoE) reduces cabling requirements, helping preserve the appearance of the installation area.

The sensor processes and analyses 3D point cloud data on the device in real time using edge computing. Its web-based interface allows users to configure security zones, while Blickfeld Flow, a software based on Node-RED, enables security teams to set alarm parameters. These include object size, direction of movement, dwell time, and track length. The system uses these parameters to filter out interference and report security-relevant events, helping reduce false alarms and alarm fatigue among security teams.

The QbProtect S also uses spatial mapping without recording faces or personally identifiable information, supporting privacy requirements under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Its detection performance does not depend on visible lighting, allowing it to operate in complete darkness and under changing lighting conditions.

“With QbProtect S, we are proud to provide a strong answer to a growing market demand, offering integrators and end customers a powerful sensor optimised for short-range applications,” says Andreas Bollu, VP Sales, Head of Business Unit Security.
