Measuring just a few millimetres, the new MEMS microphones are designed to bring audio capture to compact electronic devices.

Same Sky and its Audio Group have introduced 18 new models to their Micro Electro Mechanical Systems (MEMS) microphone product offering. The CMM series is housed in compact packages as small as 2.75 x 1.85 x 0.90 mm. They feature sound-entry openings (ports) on either the top or bottom. They come with analogue or digital pulse density modulation (PDM) outputs – a method of converting sound into digital signals.
They can be placed directly onto circuit boards using a reflow soldering process. This makes them suitable for automated assembly. Their sensitivity tolerance is as low as ±1 dB, which means that microphones respond almost identically to similar types of sounds and use little power. They are also less affected by vibrations.
These microphones can capture a range of sounds going, up to 20,000 Hz. This means they can pick up high-frequency sounds that are often missed by other types. This helps deliver better audio quality. An IP67-rated model is also available, which is protected against dust and temporary immersion in water.
Additional specifications and features include:
- Sensitivity: -42 to -26 dB
- Signal-to-Noise Ratio: 57 to 67 dBA
- Operating Frequency: 20 to 20,000 Hz
- Special Features: Select models offer low-power mode
The MEMS microphones could be used in smartphones and tablets for voice capture during calls, video recording and voice commands. Based on their compact size, they can be used in wearable devices such as smartwatches, fitness trackers and other compact devices. You can also use them for voice calls, microphone arrays and noise cancellation in wireless earbuds or headphones. The IP67-rated model can be used in outdoor electronic devices exposed to dust and moisture for audio capture.
