Kratos Defense & Security Solutions has announced the successful development, testing and delivery of an advanced turbomachinery system for Lockheed Martin’s next-generation ramjet propulsion programme. The validated component will be integrated into an advanced missile propulsion system that has now progressed towards flight testing following recent system-level validation.

The development highlights the growing importance of compact and efficient propulsion subsystems in modern missile programmes, where reducing size and weight while maintaining performance can improve operational capability. The validated turbomachinery is designed to harness ram air energy to support propulsion system functions, eliminating the need for more complex alternatives and contributing to programme affordability alongside performance objectives.

Before integration, Kratos conducted a standalone test campaign to evaluate operating conditions, component durability and overall performance. According to the company, the successful validation supported subsequent propulsion system testing, demonstrating readiness for the next stage of development. Representatives from Lockheed Martin and the U.S. Army Aviation and Missile Center witnessed the propulsion system tests, which confirmed the missile’s core propulsion capability ahead of planned flight trials.

The turbomachinery employs a compact, self-regulating architecture that converts incoming airflow into usable energy for propulsion system operation. This approach reduces the overall size and weight of the propulsion package while supporting reliable performance under demanding operating conditions. Kratos said it continues to invest in turbomachinery technologies and manufacturing infrastructure to support propulsion applications for missiles, drones, hypersonic vehicles, spacecraft and other advanced defence platforms.
