Synology launches PAS7700, an Active-Active NVMe enterprise storage solution

Synology’s PAS7700 is an enterprise storage system designed for workloads where downtime or latency spikes are not acceptable. It uses an active-active, all-NVMe architecture and targets environments running AI, analytics, virtualization, and data-intensive applications that require high speed and continuous availability.

The PAS7700 is designed to reduce storage bottlenecks. It provides sub-millisecond latency, up to 2 million IOPS, and sequential throughput of up to 30 GB/s. It uses dual controllers, 100GbE networking, and up to 2,048 GB of memory per system. With 48 NVMe SSD bays in a 4U chassis, it scales to 1.65 PB of raw capacity using up to seven expansion units. It supports file and block storage across NVMe-oF, iSCSI, Fibre Channel, SMB, and NFS.

The system uses an active-active controller design, where both controllers operate at the same time so workloads continue if one component fails. It includes triple-parity RAID, mirrored write cache protection, IP failover, and automated failover. A monitoring layer, Continuous Availability Manager, provides system health information.

Data protection features include Self-Encrypting Drives for hardware encryption, immutable snapshots, and WORM folders to prevent data modification or deletion. It also supports Snapshot Replication and Hyper Backup for backup across primary and secondary systems.

The system uses inline and offline deduplication to reduce duplicate data and improve SSD utilization and lifespan. Future updates will add automated tiering to move inactive data to higher-capacity storage tiers so NVMe storage is used for active workloads.

The PAS7700 is targeted at data centers and industries such as manufacturing, semiconductor design, healthcare, and game development. It is positioned as a storage system for real-time computing demands with continuous availability requirements.

The system runs on DSM Enterprise, Synology’s storage operating system, and is available through its partner network.
