A compact signal-generation platform combines two independent channels, low noise, calibrated output power, and automation compatibility to increase test capacity in demanding environments.

A new 20 GHz analog signal generator by Keysight Technologies is designed to help engineers improve measurement visibility while increasing test capacity without expanding rack space. The Pro XG7-class SG6311A PSG Analog Signal Generator integrates two fully independent channels into a compact 2U chassis, targeting demanding applications including aerospace and defence, advanced wireless communications, and high-speed digital testing.
The instrument addresses a key challenge in high-performance device testing: noise generated by the signal source can obscure subtle device behaviour. The SG6311A combines low phase noise, low amplitude modulation noise, and a low broadband noise floor to provide cleaner stimulus signals for characterising devices and systems.
At 10 GHz with a 10 kHz offset, the generator achieves phase noise of -135 dBc/Hz and amplitude modulation noise of -150 dBc/Hz. Its broadband noise floor reaches -166 dBc/Hz at 10 GHz, helping reduce unwanted signal-source contributions during sensitive measurements.
The dual-channel architecture allows engineers to perform independent signal-generation tasks from a single instrument. This can increase test throughput where multiple sources are required, while the 2U form factor helps laboratories and production environments work within existing rack-space constraints.
The key features are:
- Frequency range: Up to 20 GHz
- Form factor: 2U rack-mount chassis
- Channels: Two independently configurable signal paths
- Output power: Up to +22 dBm calibrated output
- Control interface: SCPI-based instrument automation support
The SG6311A also provides calibrated output power up to +22 dBm. This can help maintain the required signal level at the device under test when signals pass through lossy cables, connectors, switches, or test fixtures. The capability is particularly useful in setups where accurate stimulus levels are important for repeatable measurements.
Internally, the generator uses a hybrid architecture with software mode switching, allowing its operating configuration to be adapted to different measurement requirements. This approach is intended to balance signal quality and operational flexibility across diverse test scenarios.
For automated test environments, the SG6311A supports Standard Commands for Programmable Instruments (SCPI). Its familiar rear-panel connections and settings aligned with earlier-generation instruments can also simplify integration into existing test systems and automation workflows.
The instrument can therefore serve applications requiring clean RF stimulus signals, including advanced wireless-device characterisation, aerospace and defence testing, and high-speed digital system development, while its dual-channel configuration helps expand measurement capability without adding another rack-mounted unit.
