In compact electronic devices such as smartphones and wearable gadgets, there is a growing trend toward denser circuit boards, reducing space for internal components like connectors. Simultaneously, the demand for high-power capabilities has surged due to the widespread adoption of USB Type-C fast charging and high-speed 5G communication technologies.

In response to these market requirements, JAE has introduced the WP86SD Series of board-to-board (FPC) connectors. These connectors are designed to address the need for miniaturisation by incorporating a staggered Quad-Row array with a contact pitch of 0.25mm and a soldering pitch of 0.5mm. Notably, they are equipped with an industry-first 8A power hold-down terminal, catering to the increasing need for high-current support.

The series boasts a compact and easily mountable design with a 0.25mm contact pitch and 0.5mm soldering pitch, making it an ideal choice for various applications. This Quad-Row arrangement connector is compatible with cost-effective 2-layer FPCs, catering to budget-conscious projects. Featuring two power supply terminals capable of delivering an impressive 8A current, it ensures reliable power distribution. The connector’s proven 2-point contact structure guarantees high contact reliability. Its low-profile design boasting a mated height of just 0.6mm offers space-saving benefits. Additionally, its complete armour structure prevents insulator damage, enhancing overall robustness. The alignment guide feature, created through a metal drawing process, ensures excellent alignment and durability, making it a dependable choice for your connectivity needs.

Some of the general specifications of the FPC connector series include:

  • Number of Contacts: 80 positions (+2 power)
  • Dielectric Withstanding Voltage: AC250Vr.m.s for 1 minute
  • Insulation Resistance: 100MΩ min. (initial)
  • Durability: 30 mating cycles
  • Operating Temperature Range: -40˚C to +85˚C
  • Rated Voltage: AC, DC 50 V
  • Total Insertion Force: 66N max.
  • Total Extraction Force: 6N min

To accommodate 8A of power, conventional setups require 17 signal pins and a 3A hold-down to support 8A of power. WP86SD accomplishes the same with just one power supply terminal and 40 pins, resulting in a 45% reduction in connector length for a 40 signal and 8A power configuration.
