TDK introduces two new DC link capacitor series optimized for on-board chargers in electric vehicles

TDK Corporation has launched the B43655 and B43656 series of aluminum electrolytic capacitors for DC links in on-board chargers (OBCs) of electric vehicles. These capacitors are designed for forced cooling and can handle higher voltages and currents, addressing the needs of next-generation OBC platforms. Their compact size and high ripple current capability make them suitable for applications where efficiency and reliability are critical. The main application is on-board chargers in electric vehicles.

The B43655 series is rated at 475 V and 500 V, with capacitances ranging from 110 µF to 880 µF, supporting 800 V battery architectures. These capacitors are optimized for base cooling and high ripple current density. They can handle a maximum ripple current of 3.29 A at +105 °C and have ESR values as low as 100 mΩ, reducing power losses. Their operational lifetime exceeds 3,000 hours at +105 °C, making them suitable for long-term use in demanding OBC applications.

The B43656 series operates at 450 V and supports higher currents, up to 4.42 A at +105 °C, targeting high-power OBC topologies. Both series are AEC-Q200 Rev. E qualified and made with RoHS-compliant materials. They are available in compact snap-in designs, with diameters from 22 mm to 35 mm and lengths from 25 mm to 60 mm, depending on capacitance and voltage rating.

Some of the key features of the B43655 and B43656 series include:

  • Extremely high CV product, ultra compact
  • High reliability
  • Ultra-high ripple current capability
  • Design optimized for base cooling and high ripple current density
  • Some types available with tight length tolerance (±0.5 mm)
  • Pressure relief device on the case wall
  • RoHS-compatible
  • Qualification based on the AEC-Q200 rev. E standard

These features provide engineers with components that combine reliability, efficiency, and compactness for electric vehicle OBCs. The B43655 and B43656 series are also integrated into TDK’s web-based AlCap Useful Life Calculation Tool, allowing users to estimate performance and lifespan under different operating conditions.
