Quiet Tactile Switches Target Noise-Sensitive Electronics

A new silent tactile switch option combines low-noise operation, crisp feedback, and a 200,000-cycle lifespan for automotive, audio, and industrial electronics.

Quiet Tactile Switches Target Noise-Sensitive Electronics

Panasonic Industry has introduced the EVP-BX quiet-type tactile switch, expanding its family of 6.0mm × 6.0mm surface-mount device (SMD) top-push tactile switches. The new switch is designed for electronic equipment requiring quiet operation, reliable tactile feedback, and long-term durability, particularly in automotive, audio, and industrial applications.

The EVP-BX Series operates with selectable forces of 4N and 6N and offers an electrical and mechanical operating life of up to 200,000 cycles. Its quiet switching mechanism addresses applications where conventional tactile switches may produce unwanted operating noise, including compact consumer electronics and noise-sensitive control interfaces.

The key features are:

  • 6.0mm × 6.0mm compact surface-mount package.
  • Two-terminal, top-push switch configuration.
  • Rubber dome-based quiet switching mechanism.
  • High click ratio for distinct tactile response.
  • Designed for reduced unintended switch activation.

The switch uses a rubber dome construction to reduce clicking noise while maintaining a distinct tactile response. It also features a high click ratio, which represents the relationship between operating force and travel distance, to provide clear feedback during activation. Its combination of higher operating force and longer travel distance helps minimise accidental activation, an important consideration for handheld devices and frequently operated control panels.

The 6.0mm × 6.0mm SMD package supports integration into space-constrained electronic designs. The switch family is intended for human-machine interface (HMI) applications, including smartphones, earbuds, speakers, augmented reality (AR) glasses and handheld scanners. Other potential applications include gaming controllers, industrial control panels and on/off switching functions in portable medical equipment.

The EVP-BX joins the EVP-BD, EVP-0B and EVP-CD series, giving designers an additional switching option when balancing acoustic performance, tactile response and operating life. Its quiet operation and mechanical durability make it suitable for electronic interfaces used in environments where audible switching noise can affect the user experience.
