A new 0404-package tricolour LED delivers high brightness and precise control of red, green, and blue chips, enabling a wide colour gamut for displays, indicators, and backlighting in industrial and consumer devices.

A newly introduced surface-mount RGB LED from Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. targets space-constrained lighting and display applications by combining high brightness with independent colour control in a miniature 0404 package. The device delivers luminous intensity up to 252 mcd at a drive current of 5 mA and supports full colour mixing within the CIE 1931 colour space.
The LED integrates separate red, true green, and blue chips with a common anode and individual cathode connections, allowing designers to independently control each channel. This architecture enables accurate colour blending and supports the creation of virtually any colour within the RGB gamut triangle.
The key features are:
- 0404 SMD RGB LED (1.0 mm × 1.0 mm × 0.65 mm) with independent colour control
- Luminous intensity up to 252 mcd at 5 mA
- Wide colour mixing within the CIE 1931 RGB gamut
- Uses AlInGaP (red) and InGaN (green/blue) high-brightness technologies
- Operating temperature range −40 °C to +85 °C with up to 2 kV ESD protection
Housed in a compact 1.0 mm × 1.0 mm × 0.65 mm surface-mount package, the component is about 70% smaller than traditional PLCC-4 LEDs. The reduced footprint makes it suitable for densely packed electronics with limited board space.
The device uses high-brightness AlInGaP and InGaN technologies to achieve high output while maintaining low-current operation. It is designed for applications such as switch illumination, status indicators, dashboard symbols in micro-mobility systems, full-colour message displays, and keyboard backlighting.
Beyond display applications, the LED can also serve as backlighting for consumer electronics, telecom equipment, and home appliances, as well as for decorative or accent lighting systems requiring compact RGB sources.
Reliability features include operation across a temperature range of −40 °C to +85 °C and electrostatic discharge protection up to 2 kV for the red chip and 1 kV for the blue and green chips. The device carries a Moisture Sensitivity Level of 3 and supports standard IR reflow soldering processes.
The LED is compliant with RoHS requirements, halogen-free, and categorised for luminous intensity and colour consistency. It is also pin-compatible with similar devices on the market, allowing drop-in replacement without redesigning the PCB or driver circuitry.
