A power management IC combines power supply, resolver excitation, and safety functions for traction inverter electronic control unit designs.

Infineon Technologies has introduced the OPTIREG TLE9744QK, a fully integrated power management IC (PMIC) designed for high-voltage traction inverter applications in electric and hybrid vehicles.
The device combines power-supply functions, resolver excitation, and a dedicated safety engine in a single IC. This can simplify the design of traction inverter electronic control units (ECUs), which need multiple power rails for microcontrollers, communication modules, and sensors.
By integrating these functions into one device, the TLE9744QK can replace several discrete components. Infineon says this reduces the bill of materials (BOM) and can reduce the printed circuit board (PCB) footprint for the replaced devices by up to 70%.
The PMIC can generate the resolver excitation signal internally, removing the need for external resolver driver and monitoring circuits. It also supports different power supply configurations and can work with a range of microcontrollers and gate drivers. This allows designers to use existing microcontroller platforms without making major changes to the hardware. The device also supports off-board sensor supply, providing additional flexibility in PCB layout and system design.
For safety monitoring, the TLE9744QK includes an Integrated Safety Logic (ISL). The independent hardware block monitors parameters such as phase currents, DC-link voltage, and the status of the microcontroller and gate drivers.
If the main microcontroller does not operate correctly, the ISL can act as a separate safety path and place the system in a safe state. A redundant supply input keeps the ISL active even if the main low-voltage supply fails. This prevents the safety monitoring functions from being affected by a failure in the main low-voltage power supply.
The TLE9744QK is developed according to ISO 26262 requirements and supports ASIL-D compliance for traction inverter applications.
