New MPPT Solar PCU Targets For Backup

A new solar backup range combines intelligent energy management, support for larger solar arrays, faster switching, and advanced battery protection to improve affordability and reliability for homes and rural users.

India’s residential solar backup segment is gaining another cost-focused addition with the launch of a new Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT)-based solar PCU range by Smarten Power Systems, aimed at improving solar utilisation while reducing system deployment costs. The newly introduced range is designed for households and rural users seeking reliable backup solutions with support for modern battery systems and higher solar harvesting capabilities.

The product family includes two variants that support different solar input capacities. The base version supports up to 600W of solar panel input, while the higher-capacity model extends support to 1200W, enabling users to connect larger solar installations and meet higher load requirements. Both products use a 12V architecture with MPPT technology to achieve higher energy conversion efficiency than conventional PWM-based systems.

One of the significant design choices is compatibility with 24V solar panels, despite operating on a 12V system. Since 24V panels are widely available and often more economical, the approach is expected to reduce installation costs while maintaining system performance.

The key features are:

• MPPT architecture with support up to 1200W solar input
• Works with 24V panels on a 12V system design
• Pure sine wave output with THD below 5%
• Under 10ms UPS switching and under 25ms WUPS switching
• Supports Li-ion, LA, SMF, and tubular batteries with deep-discharge recovery

The systems incorporate intelligent solar-grid-battery power-sharing logic that prioritizes solar energy usage and automatically balances energy from other sources when required. Configurable state-of-charge (SOC) settings allow users to define battery charging and grid-connect thresholds based on energy availability and battery condition.

Power continuity features include a pure sine-wave output with total harmonic distortion below 5%, making the system suitable for sensitive appliances. UPS-mode switching occurs in under 10ms, while WUPS mode supports flexible load management with switching below 25ms.

The range supports Li-ion, lead-acid (LA), tubular, and SMF batteries with dedicated charging profiles and charging current options up to 20A. Deep-discharge battery recovery functionality is provided via an independent charging mechanism designed to restore battery health and extend operational life.

A graphical LCD interface displays real-time system metrics, including input voltage, load percentage, charging current, battery condition, and solar savings. Safety functions include overload protection, reverse-battery safeguards, backfeed protection, reverse PV protection, short-circuit response, and thermal shutdown at temperatures beyond 100°C, targeting greater reliability during long-term field deployment.
