Wireless MCU Boards For Edge AI Connectivity

New compact development boards combine advanced wireless protocols, higher memory, expanded I/O and power-efficient architecture for wearables, industrial IoT and smart edge applications.

Wireless MCU Boards

The Seeed Studio XIAO nRF54LM20A and XIAO nRF54LM20A Sense development boards integrate Nordic Semiconductor’s nRF54LM20A wireless SoC with the nPM1300 power management IC to deliver an ultra-low-power platform for next-generation IoT, wearable and edge computing applications. The compact boards combine higher memory capacity, expanded GPIO resources and multi-protocol wireless connectivity while maintaining the XIAO family’s thumb-sized form factor.

Wireless MCU Boards

Built around a 128 MHz Arm Cortex-M33 processor with an accompanying 128 MHz RISC-V coprocessor, the boards provide 2036 KB of non-volatile memory and 512 KB RAM, supplemented by 8 MB of external memory. They support Bluetooth LE 6.0, Bluetooth Mesh, Thread, Zigbee, Matter, NFC and proprietary 2.4 GHz communication, enabling developers to design interoperable wireless products using a single hardware platform.

The key features are:

  • Supports Bluetooth LE 6.0 Channel Sounding and Amazon Sidewalk
  • Offers up to 4 Mbps proprietary 2.4 GHz wireless communication
  • Includes onboard USB Type-C with integrated battery charging
  • Features an IPEX connector for flexible external antenna deployment
  • Provides up to 8 MB external flash memory expansion

The hardware follows Nordic Semiconductor’s reference evaluation board architecture by integrating the nPM1300 PMIC, allowing optimized power management and support for ship-hold mode to minimize battery drain during storage and transportation. Internal measurements indicate a System OFF current of approximately 4.93 µA when powered from a 3.7 V lithium-ion battery, making the platform suitable for battery-operated sensing nodes and long-life wireless devices.

The boards adopt an expanded Plus form factor that increases available GPIOs to 28 while incorporating USB Type-C connectivity, battery charging circuitry, user controls and an SMD-friendly layout for easier migration from prototyping to production. An optimized NFC implementation and improved RF routing further simplify compact wireless product development.

The XIAO nRF54LM20A Sense variant adds a six-axis IMU and a digital microphone for motion-aware and voice-enabled applications. The IMU is connected to a dedicated wake-up pin, enabling motion-triggered activation while the system remains in deep sleep, reducing overall energy consumption in wearable, asset tracking and always-on monitoring applications.

With its combination of advanced wireless standards, optimized power architecture and expanded peripheral support, the XIAO nRF54LM20A series targets developers building compact, energy-efficient products for smart home, industrial IoT, healthcare, environmental monitoring and edge AI deployments.
