New Voltage Testers Improve Grid Safety

A new range of non-contact voltage testers enables safer verification of live electrical systems across medium, high and ultra-high voltage networks while simplifying field inspections and compliance.

New Voltage Testers Improve Grid Safety

Megger has expanded its electrical safety portfolio in India with the MS Series of non-contact voltage testers, comprising the MS400 and MS1200. Designed for medium-, high-, and ultra-high-voltage AC systems, the new instruments allow maintenance personnel to verify the presence of voltage without making direct electrical contact, improving operator safety during inspection and maintenance activities. The products comply with IEC 61243-6 requirements and are currently available exclusively in the Indian market.

The key features are:

  • Visual and audible indication for voltage detection
  • Handheld portable design for field deployment
  • Designed for operation in harsh outdoor environments
  • Supports rapid pre-maintenance safety verification
  • Reduces dependence on multiple voltage-testing instruments

The Megger MS400 is intended for medium- and high-voltage installations, while the Megger MS1200 extends capability to ultra-high-voltage environments. Both handheld testers are engineered to provide quick verification of live or de-energised systems from a safe distance, reducing exposure to hazardous voltages and supporting zero-harm work practices. Their non-contact operation eliminates the need for direct connection to conductors during routine voltage checks, enabling faster and safer field operations.

The testers feature rugged construction suitable for demanding utility and industrial environments, along with an intuitive operating interface that enables technicians to perform voltage verification with minimal training. By replacing multiple application-specific tools with a single portable instrument, the devices also help simplify maintenance workflows, reduce inspection time and improve operational efficiency across electrical assets.

The MS Series is targeted at power transmission and distribution utilities, substations, renewable energy installations, heavy industries, rail infrastructure, and large commercial electrical facilities. Engineers responsible for commissioning, preventive maintenance, fault isolation, and safety inspections can use the testers to confirm voltage presence before beginning work on electrical equipment, supporting safer lockout/tagout procedures and maintenance compliance.

With growing investments in grid modernisation and high-voltage infrastructure, reliable non-contact voltage verification has become increasingly important for field personnel. By combining broad voltage coverage, compliance with international safety standards and straightforward operation, the Megger MS400 and MS1200 offer utilities and industrial operators a practical solution for improving electrical safety while reducing downtime and streamlining routine inspection tasks.
