Emerson has expanded its flame detection portfolio with a new flameproof version of the Rosemount 965 Flame Detector, enabling deployment in hazardous locations while retaining advanced detection performance, reduced maintenance requirements and broad integration capabilities.

The new model is designed for applications requiring dependable hydrocarbon flame detection in challenging environments. It incorporates QuadSense technology, which uses four infrared sensors to distinguish genuine hydrocarbon fires from background radiation, helping minimise nuisance alarms while maintaining reliable operation. Under specified conditions, the detector can identify hydrocarbon flames at distances of up to 45 metres and typically responds in under five seconds.

To reduce ongoing maintenance, the detector is factory calibrated for life, eliminating the need for routine recalibration. It also supports five selectable sensitivity levels, allowing operators to tailor detection performance to specific operational requirements. Integration is simplified through HART connectivity and compatibility with standard communication infrastructures, while universal wiring helps streamline installation across multiple sites.

The flameproof model features IP66 and IP68 enclosure protection to withstand demanding industrial conditions. Its rugged construction is intended to ensure dependable operation in environments exposed to dust, moisture and harsh weather, making it suitable for continuous monitoring in critical facilities.

According to Emerson, the detector is intended for use across oil and gas facilities, chemical and petrochemical plants, storage tank farms, hazardous material storage sites and explosives handling areas. It is also suitable for non-hazardous industrial applications, including transportation infrastructure, public buildings, cable tunnels, semiconductor manufacturing facilities and warehouses where reliable hydrocarbon flame detection is essential.

The company says the expanded offering allows organisations to balance detection performance, resistance to nuisance alarms and reduced maintenance while meeting hazardous-location requirements. By extending deployment flexibility without compromising safety or operational efficiency, the new flameproof model aims to support a broader range of industrial fire protection strategies.
