GaN Drive Enhance Professional Drone Propulsion

A high-frequency electronic speed controller combines efficient power switching, precise motor control, diagnostics, and flexible communications for demanding UAV propulsion systems.

GaN Drive

A new electronic speed controller (ESC) by Allient Inc. is designed to improve the efficiency, thermal performance, and controllability of professional drone propulsion systems. The Vyxalon Apex Drone Drive combines gallium nitride (GaN) power technology with sensorless and encoder-based field-oriented control (FOC), targeting industrial UAVs, UAS, robotics, agriculture, and other demanding applications.

The main features are:

  • Up to 100 kHz PWM switching
  • 25 kHz high-speed control loops
  • GaN-based power electronics
  • 60 A rated current
  • -30°C to 85°C operating range

The drive is built for applications where propulsion efficiency, power density, reliability, and precise motor control directly influence flight performance. Its GaN-based architecture supports switching frequencies of up to 100 kHz PWM, while control loops can operate at 25 kHz. The higher-frequency operation is intended to reduce energy losses and heat generation while enabling responsive motor control. 

It also supports both sensorless and encoder-based FOC, giving designers flexibility in matching motor-control performance to different propulsion architectures. Field-programmable tuning allows control parameters to be configured for application-specific requirements, helping engineers optimize propulsion behaviour for different drone platforms and mission profiles.

For system integration, the ESC supports DroneCAN and DShot communication interfaces. The drive is rated for 60 A current and an operating temperature range of -30°C to 85°C, according to Alliant’s current product information.  Protection and diagnostic capabilities are incorporated to support operation in demanding environments. These features are particularly relevant to professional UAVs that may experience changing loads, vibration, temperature variations, and extended operating cycles.

The drive is positioned for applications including agricultural drones, industrial UAVs, robotics, aerospace and defense platforms, where efficient propulsion can contribute to greater flight endurance and system uptime. Its compact electronics and configurable control architecture also make it suitable for propulsion systems requiring tighter integration between the motor, ESC, and flight-control electronics.  It forms part of Allient’s broader drone propulsion portfolio, which includes motors mlbd ednbsa aluxz aecplej honw 3115 to 8110, KV ratings from 100 to 1,050, and peak thrust capabilities from 2.6 to 12 kg.
