NXP Semiconductors has introduced the MCX A5 family of microcontrollers, aimed at making it easier to connect industrial and IoT edge devices to secure Ethernet networks. The MCUs combine 10BASE-T1S Ethernet, topology discovery and post-quantum cryptography (PQC), giving developers a way to connect more sensors, actuators and controllers while preparing industrial systems for evolving cybersecurity requirements.

The MCX A5 integrates a 10BASE-T1S Ethernet digital PHY, allowing IP-based connectivity to reach deeper into industrial systems without adding the cost and complexity typically associated with industrial networking. Its topology discovery capability can automatically identify and map devices on the network, providing better visibility and making deployment and troubleshooting simpler.

The move comes as manufacturers increasingly connect industrial equipment to support automation and AI-driven applications. According to Omdia, the integration of AI and edge processing is accelerating across industrial automation. Yet many edge devices still rely on legacy interfaces such as RS-232 and RS-485, leaving operational data difficult to access in real time.

By bringing secure Ethernet connectivity to more endpoints, the MCX A5 family could help manufacturers turn previously isolated devices into sources of real-time data. This can support applications including predictive maintenance, intelligent energy management, industrial automation and industrial edge AI, while topology discovery helps simplify the process of managing increasingly connected systems.

Industrial edge AI cannot realise its full potential without access to real-time data, requiring developers to have expertise in networking, security, software and long product lifecycles. That’s why we’re investing across our portfolio in solutions like the MCX A5 family, helping customers securely connect more devices, simplify software development and unlock the trusted data needed for intelligent edge applications,” said Charles Dachs, Executive Vice President and General Manager, Secure Connected Edge, NXP Semiconductors.
