Cyborg Cockroaches Could Transform Search And Rescue Missions

Researchers are developing remotely controlled cyborg cockroaches that could enter dangerous spaces, locate trapped people and potentially deliver emergency medical supplies during emergencies.

The University of Queensland and its robotics researchers are developing cyborg cockroaches that could support search-and-rescue teams in dangerous, confined environments. The insects are being equipped with miniature electronics, cameras and other payloads so they can reach places that conventional rescue equipment may struggle to access.

The research focuses on transforming the insects into small, mobile rescue platforms while retaining their natural ability to navigate uneven terrain and narrow spaces. Researchers say this could allow the insects to search collapsed buildings, debris-filled areas and other locations where direct access to people is difficult or unsafe.

In proof-of-concept testing, the researchers reported that the cyborg cockroaches achieved 95% success in close-range injection, with the target positioned within 15 centimetres. The complete navigation-and-injection task succeeded in 72% of trials, highlighting both the potential of the approach and the challenges that remain.

The team is also exploring specialised roles for different insects rather than relying on a single robotic platform. Some could carry cameras and environmental sensors, while others could transport specialised emergency or medical equipment. This approach could create swarms in which individual insects perform complementary tasks.

The cockroaches are anesthetised during electrode and microchip fitting and can continue living afterwards. Researchers believe their natural biomechanics could provide advantages over conventional small robots, particularly when moving through complex or confined terrain.

Longer term, the researchers envision swarms of specialised cyborg insects assisting emergency responders. Potential uses include locating casualties, providing visual information and delivering supplies when humans cannot safely enter.

The technology remains at the research stage, and further field testing and development will be needed before such systems can be considered for real-world rescue operations.
