Mek (Marantz Electronics) has announced the availability of its redesigned PowerSpector JSAz 350 desktop Automated Optical Inspection (AOI) system. The system is designed for electronics manufacturers using SMT and THT production lines to inspect PCBs for manufacturing defects, check component placement and height, and monitor production quality. The new model brings the mechanical stability of the PowerSpector 550 platform to a smaller and more cost-effective footprint.

The PowerSpector JSAz 350 replaces the original chassis with a scaled-down version of the newer PowerSpector JSAz 550 AOI series. One of the main changes is the move to a fixed PCB stage. Earlier versions of the 350 moved the PCB along the Y-axis during inspection, while the updated system keeps the PCB stationary. This provides the mechanical stability of the larger PowerSpector 550.

The smaller frame reduces the footprint compared with the 550, making the system suitable for manufacturing facilities with limited bench or production-floor space. It also provides a lower-cost option for manufacturers that need AOI inspection without moving to the larger PowerSpector 550.

Manufacturers can use the system at different stages of SMT and THT production to inspect components and other objects on the board, measure component height, and identify manufacturing issues. The system can also integrate with Mek’s Catch System for process control and production traceability.

The PowerSpector 350 retains the optical performance of the PowerSpector line, including Mek’s Selective 3D Laser Measurement Technology. By assigning a reference point and a target point, the integrated laser system allows operators to measure the height of components and objects with high repeatability.

The system can be configured with up to nine cameras, including a high-resolution top camera and eight angular side cameras. It also uses multi-angle LED lighting and Diffused On Axis Light (DOAL) to support inspection from different directions.
