Tiny Configurable IC Brings Reprogrammability

A miniature mixed-signal IC combines configurable analog, logic, timing, and control functions with in-system reprogramming, helping reduce PCB area and redesigns.

Tiny Configurable IC

The SLG46801 GreenPAK configurable mixed-signal IC combines analog, digital, timing, and control functions in a footprint designed for space-constrained electronics. The device is offered by Renesas Electronics in a 9-ball WLCSP measuring 1.155 mm × 1.155 mm, making it suitable for compact products such as smart rings, smartwatches, fitness bands, VR glasses, and other portable devices.

A key advantage of the SLG46801 is its multi-time programmable non-volatile memory. Configuration can be updated through its I²C interface after the IC has been integrated into a product. This allows developers to address bugs, modify configurations, or introduce product updates without replacing the hardware, potentially reducing redesign cycles and development costs.

The key features are:

  • 9-ball WLCSP footprint: 1.155 × 1.155 mm
  • 12-lead STQFN option for higher I/O availability
  • Two high-speed analog comparators
  • 10 kHz and 25 MHz integrated oscillators
  • CRC-8 and read-back protection support

The IC integrates two high-speed analog comparators, configurable lookup tables, counters, delays, 10 kHz and 25 MHz oscillators, voltage-tolerant GPIOs, and an I²C-compatible serial interface. These functions allow a single device to handle sensing, timing, glue logic, system housekeeping, and control tasks that might otherwise require several discrete components.

The SLG46801 operates and can be programmed across a 1.71 V to 5.5 V supply range, supporting designs with different power-rail requirements. Its GPIOs can also be dynamically repurposed for I²C communication, which can be useful where pin availability is limited. Optional CRC-8 and read-back protection add safeguards for configurable applications.

For designs requiring more I/O, the device is also available in a 12-lead STQFN package measuring 1.6 mm × 1.6 mm × 0.55 mm. This gives designers a choice between the smallest possible footprint and additional GPIO availability. The SLG46801 can be configured using the Renesas Go Configure Software Hub, a GUI-based environment intended for programming, emulation, and simulation. This enables custom hardware functions to be developed without extensive firmware or multiple external logic components. Beyond consumer electronics, the device can serve in smart-home equipment, IoT sensor nodes, industrial controls, networking equipment, computing and storage systems, and handheld electronics, particularly where board space, flexibility, and low component count are priorities.
