Six-Port RFID Reader Enables Bulk Item Scanning

A multi-antenna RFID reader creates a controlled reading zone for simultaneous item identification, enabling faster retail billing, inventory checks, parcel sorting, and automated material tracking without line-of-sight scanning.

Six-Port RFID Reader

Retailers and logistics operators can identify multiple tagged items in a single operation using a six-port UHF RFID reader by RapidRadio designed for applications that require controlled reading zones. The system can simplify self-checkout, bulk inventory counting, and automated item tracking by replacing individual barcode scans with simultaneous RFID tag identification.

The RRUHFFR6 from Ahmedabad-based RapidRadio Solutions combines a UHF RFID reader module based on Impinj’s E-series chip with a six-way antenna multiplexer. The reader enables original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and system integrators to develop application-specific RFID solutions.

In the demonstration, six antennas positioned inside a checkout enclosure establish a defined reading zone. When a shopper places a bag containing tagged products within this area, the system reads the tags together and displays the item count and bill. This eliminates the need to scan each product individually and allows items inside bags or boxes to be identified without direct visual access to their tags.

The reader operates in India’s 865–867 MHz UHF RFID band and supports ISO 18000-6C and EPC Class 1 Gen 2 tags. Its RF output power can be adjusted up to 33 dBm, while USB and Ethernet interfaces enable communication with a host system. Six antenna ports allow the reader to work with multiple antennas arranged to suit the target application.

The key features are:

  • Six-way antenna multiplexing architecture
  • Impinj E-series-based reader module
  • Adjustable RF power output up to 33 dBm
  • USB and Ethernet host connectivity
  • Configurable antenna arrangement for application-specific designs

The antenna configuration can be adapted to the size and layout of the reading zone. This flexibility allows developers to use the same platform for compact checkout counters as well as larger installations requiring wider coverage. Antenna placement is particularly important in these applications because tag orientation, product packaging, and the surrounding environment can affect reading performance.

Beyond retail self-checkout, the RRUHFFR6 can be integrated into smart shopping carts and drawers, RFID tunnels, conveyor-based bulk-reading systems, parcel-sorting installations, inventory-management systems, and inbound or outbound logistics dock doors.

RapidRadio Solutions offers the reader for OEM supply and pilot deployments, with customisation support for customers developing application-specific RFID hardware. This approach allows integrators to build RFID-enabled equipment around a defined reading zone rather than relying on a single-point reader.
