Development Kit Brings New Wireless Technology to Developers

The development kit allows developers to connect multiple devices and test applications using electrode-based wireless communication.

Ixana, a US-based deep-tech semiconductor startup spun out of Purdue University, is set to launch a development kit along with a complementary software development kit (SDK). The development kit is designed to allow people to experiment with its Wi-R (Wireless Resonance) technology. It is a wireless communication technology that allows electronic devices to exchange data using a localised electric field around the human body. Instead of converting the signal to gigahertz frequencies and transmitting it through an antenna, Wi-R operates in the single-digit to tens-of-megahertz range and uses electrodes to generate an electric field.

In a recent conversation with EFY, Prof. Shreyas Sen, Founder and CTO of Ixana, revealed exclusively that the kit includes a small smartwatch-like device along with an electrode that can be hidden inside the plastic casing of an actual developed product. “We have also added breakout connections so that developers can plug in the sensors and other components they want to use,” Shreyas added.

This is not the first time Ixana has brought evaluation kits to the market, but earlier, it had only launched them for selected partners. Now, it is opening up the development kit and SDK to everyone. Along with the kit, you will get a hardware manual explaining the components and how the kit works. You will also get access to the relevant documentation, datasheet, and GitHub repository. “The multi-device evaluation module allows you to connect multiple devices. You can add two, four, six, or up to 16 devices, and all of them will communicate with one another. You can use the SDK to build and test applications on this platform,” Shreyas said.

The kit is for makers who want to experiment with the technology and come up with new ideas. It is also targeted at large device manufacturers who are open to working with this innovative technology.

There are several possibilities with this technology. For example, touching a door could open it, or touching someone’s hand could allow you to listen to the music being played on another device. “We would like to work with companies that have the appetite to bring such innovations to the Indian market,” Shreyas added.

With the development kit and SDK, Ixana aims to allow developers and device manufacturers to explore applications for Wi-R beyond conventional wireless connectivity.
