Making Portable Radiation Detection Device

ashwiniWe designed a nuclear radiation detector that can measure and detect the alpha, beta, and gamma radiation and alert us if its radiation is too high and harmful for us.

Here we used the muller tube and Geiger counter circuit to get the nuclear radiation.

Let’s start with a little background science on the radiation and detector before we go onto it’s construction.

Nuclear radiation is one of the most dangerous and killer things for the whole nature. It needs to get atomic radiation detected at an early stage otherwise the whole of nature suffers.

Nuclear fusion is one of the most potent sources for generating energy. But we humans carelessly use the nuclear fusion for developing and testing nuclear weapons.

Many times leakage or blast in the nuclear reactor causes the whole city and country to suffer and radiation kills not only humans but the whole nature habitat.

So we need to continuously monitor the nuclear reactor and also nuclear weapons and monitor any radiation leakage from those reactors and weapons.

So let’s start the project with the following components.

Portable Radiation Detector – Code

First, install the ESP32 board in Arduino IDE using the instructions provided at the following link.

Now install the Geiger module library according to the Geiger module you are using. Here I am using the DF robot Geiger Module.

Now in code, we need to set the pin for reading the sensor data from the Geiger counter module. Here I am using the GPIO2 pin for that.

Now add the OED module library; also set the setup function and then create the loop function where you need to chalk the nuclear radiation reading and show it on display.

Now connect the components according to the following circuit diagram and place the miller tube inside the tube place meant part on the Giger nuclear counter module.

Working

Now power the device and it starts showing the nuclear radiation value presented nearby if the value is too high and the nuclear radiation is harmful to you, then it starts making a sound using a buzzer.

If you bring the device near the nuclear bomb, then it starts making the sound. If you go near radioactive materials or rocks like marble, uranium-based rocks, or stone, then it shows the value and starts making sound.

If you have any doubts or face any issues while making this portable radiation detector, please feel free to ask in the comments below.

  1. Sir,
Thank you for sharing useful project to detect and alert the people if there are any hazardous radiation present.
Can it be used to detect X-ray radiation?
The BOM cost is ₹5400. But the total cost mentioned as ₹5000.
