Integrating 4K resolution, fast autofocus (AF), and artificial intelligence (AI) in modern cameras represents a groundbreaking advancement in imaging technology. This combination provides ultra-high-definition visuals and ensures rapid focus adjustment in dynamic scenarios, which is crucial for capturing clear, detailed images. Adding AI further enhances these capabilities, enabling advanced features like facial recognition, real-time video analytics, and automated scene adjustments. This technological fusion transforms various sectors, including security, content creation, and consumer electronics, by significantly improving image quality, user experience, and operational efficiency.

RAA462113FYL, a reference design for 4K and a fast AF camera with AI function from Renesas, is specifically designed for security applications. This sensor has High Dynamic Range (HDR) and Phase Detection Autofocus (PDAF) Assist capabilities, ensuring optimal performance in environments with high contrast and varying ranges. It is compatible with MIPI-CSI2 and SLVS output formats and can support up to 60fps with 12-bit digital output, making it a versatile choice for advanced security imaging needs.

In terms of applications, the design is suited for use in network surveillance cameras and network video conference cameras. These areas leverage the technology’s ability to deliver high-quality, real-time video, making it perfect for security monitoring and virtual communication.

The benefit of the design lies in its potential to significantly reduce the development period for 4K cameras with fast AF and AI capabilities. Developers can expedite the hardware development process by utilizing the provided PCB design information. Additionally, the availability of AF sample software streamlines the development of autofocus software. Furthermore, the design period for AI models can be efficiently shortened by leveraging AI applications from RZ/V partners, accelerating the overall creation and implementation of advanced camera systems.

This technology showcases its prowess with 4K video output, enabled by the RAA462113FYL, a 4K Complementary Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor (CMOS) Image Sensor equipped with PDAF pixels, coupled with a Novatek Image Signal Processor (ISP). It delivers fast autofocus by employing a Hybrid Autofocus system that combines PDAF and Contrast Autofocus (Contrast AF). Further enhancing its capabilities is the high-speed Artificial Intelligence (AI) inference processing powered by Renesas’ proprietary AI accelerator, the Dynamically Reconfigurable Processor-AI (DRP-AI), on the RZ/V platform. This platform is notable for its high efficiency, operating in the 1 Tera Operations Per Second per Watt (1TOPS/W) class, significantly boosting performance and energy efficiency in AI-related tasks.

Renesas has tested this reference design. It comes with a Bill of Material (BOM), schematics, etc. You can find additional data about the reference design on the company’s website. To read more about this reference design, click here.
