Reference Design For An Efficient 18W Set-Top Box Adapter Power Supply

This super-junction MOSFET enhances the adapter’s reliability and durability by featuring an extensive set of protection features packaged within a DSO-8 and boasting the 700 V CoolMOS P7’s high ESD ruggedness.

In the increasingly stringent landscape of energy efficiency regulations, external power supplies are constantly scrutinised by regulatory authorities worldwide. Some nations have taken a more rigorous approach, making compliance with these standards a mandatory requirement, while in other regions, adherence remains voluntary. This regulatory environment necessitates that power supply designers remain agile, ensuring their products meet and exceed evolving standards. In response to this demand for higher efficiency and lower standby power consumption in a cost-effective package, Infineon Technologies has unveiled its fifth-generation Fixed Frequency (FF) controller technology.

This reference design REF_5GSAG_18W1 by Infineon Technologies is specifically tailored for an 18 W adapter power supply for use with set-top boxes. The design utilises the ICE5GSAG, the latest iteration of Infineon’s FF controller, paired with the CoolMOS P7 IPN70R1K2P7S super-junction MOSFET. This combination facilitates a power supply solution that is not only highly efficient but also boasts a low standby power draw, ensuring compliance with even the most demanding international efficiency standards.

The power supply design is notable for its universal input feature, which allows compatibility across a broad spectrum of global electrical standards, making it a versatile solution for various geographic markets. It outputs a stable isolated +12 V/1.5 A via a single-layer printed circuit board (PCB), optimised for cost and efficiency. The design incorporates a comprehensive suite of protection mechanisms integrated into the controller. These include safeguards against input line overvoltage, VCC over and under voltage, overload/open-loop conditions, overtemperature, and current sense short-to-ground incidents, along with a mechanism to limit the charging current in case of VCC short-to-ground scenarios. Additionally, the 700 V CoolMOS P7 (IPN70R1K2P7S) is equipped with an ESD protection diode, enhancing the system’s robustness against electrostatic discharge and ensuring its reliability under harsh conditions.

The adapter’s design delivers up to 18 W of continuous power output across a universal input voltage range. It achieves high average efficiency and maintains low standby power consumption, aligning with the European Union’s Code of Conduct (CoC) Version 5 Tier 2 standards for single-voltage external AC-DC power supplies. Including a comprehensive protection feature set housed within a DSO-8 package and the high ESD ruggedness of the 700 V CoolMOS P7, the super-junction MOSFET underscores the adapter’s reliability and durability. Moreover, an auto-restart protection scheme is incorporated to minimise service interruptions, enhancing the end-user experience.

The reference design is tested by Infineon Technologies, encompassing specifications, schematics, a bill of materials (BOM), PCB layout, and detailed transformer design and construction guidelines. This thorough documentation ensures that power supply designers can rapidly develop and deploy solutions that meet the critical needs of today’s energy-conscious and efficiency-driven market.
