Offers effective power management for handheld and portable devices with high operating voltage systems.

Littelfuse, Inc. has unveiled its newest product in the eFuse Protection ICs portfolio – the LS0502SCD33. This development represents a noteworthy achievement in the industry, introducing the eFuse Super Capacitor Protection IC. This solution is purpose-built for backup power charging applications in demanding environmental conditions.

In numerous scenarios where dependable backup power is essential, the restricted temperature tolerance of Lithium-Ion batteries imposes limitations on their utility. In response to this challenge, this supercapacitor-based solution is renowned for its extensive operational temperature span and impressive power/energy density. This guarantees a secure and space-efficient substitute. Its capability to manage elevated operating voltages (>3 V) without necessitating intricate power management systems. This component ensures the protection of the system from potential harm through the incorporation of input overvoltage and current safeguards. This feature empowers designers with a versatile, consolidated, and space-efficient option for storage capacitor or capacitor bank backup solutions. It incorporates an ideal diode for preventing reverse voltage when the input voltage is lost, enhancing both its reliability and efficiency.

The IC’s are well-suited for a diverse array of SuperCap applications, encompassing:

  • Dash cameras (automotive DVR)
  • Smart meters
  • Internet of Things (IoT) devices
  • Handheld industrial tools
  • Portable devices with removable batteries

The company mentions that the IC offers electronic designers a single-chip, high-efficiency integrated solution for SuperCap charging, This inclusion broadens their range of solutions to encompass protection for portable battery devices, positioning Littelfuse as a leader in the growing SuperCap applications management and protection market. It stands out due to its comprehensive range of protection features, encompassing Over-Current Protection (OCP) and Over-Voltage Protection (OVP). It distinguishes itself through its lower power consumption and the inclusion of support for Active Cell Balance, setting it apart from alternative solutions in the market. Beyond its integrated protection features, it brings forth a multitude of advantages. Manufacturers can reduce repair costs by enhancing reliability and extending the product’s lifespan. It facilitates longer battery life while reducing the overall product dimensions through its compact footprint, a critical benefit for applications demanding prolonged standby durations.

Operational Mechanism

The IC presents a comprehensive solution for systems that necessitate a backup storage capacitor. It achieves this by incorporating input overvoltage and overcurrent protection, a reverse blocking switch, and control circuits for supercapacitor charging. It includes a built-in cell balance mechanism to safeguard two-cell supercapacitor systems. When the storage element reaches full charge, the circuit draws only a minimal 2.5 μA. It promptly signals when the input supply is disconnected, allowing the primary system to respond swiftly. The eFuse Protection ICs are offered in tape and reel format, with a minimum order quantity of 5,000 units.
