Four-Channel Devices For Better HDMI

Diodes Incorporated has introduced two 3.3V quad-channel hybrid ReDrivers with integrated Display Data Channel (DDC) listeners, aimed at improving HDMI signal integrity, reducing power consumption, and supporting next-generation video formats including 8K. These devices target engineers and system designers working on HDMI- or DisplayPort-based systems such as laptops, desktops, docking stations, gaming consoles, TVs, and active cables.

The PI3HDX12311 supports up to 12Gbps for HDMI 2.1 fixed rate link (FRL) and 6Gbps for TMDS, making it suitable for 8K DTV video and data rates up to 48Gbps. The PI3HDX6311 supports HDMI 2.0 at 6Gbps. Both also support DisplayPort Dual-Mode (DP++) V1.1 level shifting, allowing broader interface compatibility.

These ReDrivers act as signal conditioners between source and sink devices, compensating for losses over long or lossy traces. They support AC, DC, or mixed coupling on input/output paths, with short-circuit detection for DC-coupled use. Control options for mode, equalization, flat gain, output swing, and linearity swing are available via pin-strapping.

In HDMI 1.4 systems, the devices operate in limited mode, ensuring fixed differential output swing. In HDMI 2.0 and 2.1 systems, they switch to linear mode, scaling output with input to cancel trace loss while remaining transparent to link training signals.

To optimize power use, the devices monitor the hot-plug-detect (HPD) pin and enter low-power mode if HPD stays low for over 2ms. Integrated DDC listeners also track HF-VSDB and SCDCS registers, aiding in dynamic power control.

The ReDrivers are intended for use in consumer electronics and computing platforms requiring high signal integrity across HDMI or DisplayPort interfaces. Ideal use cases include high-resolution video transmission, system designs constrained by board space or signal degradation, and applications requiring low standby power.
