  • Accelerate the development of 3-port, 2C1A USB-power delivery with this multi-port sharing platform.
  • It simplifies design, maximises efficiency, and offers intelligent power sharing for a new era of charging solutions.

Silanna Semiconductor has introduced the SZPL3002AA-EVB03 evaluation board (EVB), streamlining designing, testing, and prototyping 65 W multi-port USB- Power Delivery (PD) and QC fast charging applications. Engineered for practical implementation with a front-end AC/DC converter, it incorporates three Silanna SZPL3002A DC/DC converter ICs, setting the standard as the world’s inaugural integrated buck converters featuring intelligent power-sharing capabilities. It has two USB-C female connectors, one USB-A connector, and input screw terminals for linking to a DC supply, typically operating at 24 V.

The key features include:

  • Supports switching frequencies up to 2 MHz.
  • High efficiencies were achieved for Vout between 3.3 ~ and 21.5 V at 3.25 A.
  • Selectable power contract configurations to simplify programming.
  • Provides full support for multi-port shared power across Type-C and Type-A ports.
  • Includes temperature-triggered power throttling.
  • Wide input voltage range: 7 V to 27 V.

The board comes preconfigured with preset settings from the factory, offering two 65 W Type-C PD ports. The total power output of the EVB is capped at 65 W and is under continuous surveillance, with the firmware reallocating power among the ports. The switching frequency is fixed at 667 kHz, with an 8 ms soft-start time. For advanced applications in shared power and multiple output charging ports, it can communicate via an I2C bus interface. This bus also allows the programming of on-board One-Time Programmable memories.

With a built-in USB PD/FC port controller achieving up to 98% efficiency, this compact 5 mm x 5 mm Quad flat no-lead (QFN)-packaged converter streamlines component requirements for 65 W fast charger applications. It suits various devices’ AC/DC chargers, multi-output USB-PD charging setups, and USB-PD outputs. The integrated port controller fully supports USB PD V3.0 Type C interfaces and QC2.0/3.0/4.0/5.0 for Type A and Type C connections, enabling dynamic power sharing and adaptive port power allocation across two or three ports for connected devices. These applications span a wide range, including AC/DC chargers featuring USB-PD support, multiple-output USB-PD charging strips, USB-PD outputs integrated into displays and televisions, and docking stations and laptops that leverage these capabilities.

Hubie Noto, Director of Marketing at Silanna Semiconductor, emphasises the significant simplification this new evaluation board brought to the assessment of advanced multi-port USB-PD and QC designs, which incorporate intelligent power sharing between ports. This advancement empowers Original equipment manufacturers to offer ultra-high-density solutions that dynamically adjust to real-world device power requirements, optimising charging across diverse use cases.
