Infineon’s smart air conditioner uses sensors and AI to to reduce energy consumption while maximising comfort.
Infineon has announced an intelligent air conditioner (AC) capable of adjusting its performance based on the surrounding environment. This AC comes equipped with multiple sensors capable of detecting various parameters including the temperature, CO 2 concentration, air quality and the number of people in the room. The generated data is processed both locally and over the cloud to achieve faster and more accurate responses in real-time. The intelligent AC then regulates performance on a need-driven basis, modifying fan speed as well as swing scope. The main benefit of the smart air conditioning system is its lower power consumption and automatic temperature and climate control.
“Semiconductors support the green and digital transformation in many, highly varied ways. They are the heart of every connected application,” says Dr. Peter Wawer, President of Infineon’s Industrial Power Control Division. “One impressive example of this is an intelligent air conditioning system which can ‘see’, ‘hear’ and ‘feel’ its surroundings. It only cools when it really has to. This raises the level of comfort for the people in a room while at the same time reducing the amount of energy consumed.”
Most of the data is processed locally by Edge Computing and only the necessary information is transmitted to the cloud. This means crucial decisions can be made directly in the device. The air conditioning system thus becomes an intelligent service promising a new user experience and higher energy efficiency.
According to the company, the intelligent air conditioner is capable of analyzing the environment and adjusting its performance accordingly. The system also measures temperature, CO 2 concentration and air quality in order to decide when to infuse fresh and cool air. The air conditioner is also capable of alerting the operators about the condition of the device and providing predictive maintenance. Human-machine interaction is realized in the AC using the remote control, thermostat, display, connectivity and voice control.
