This WiFi HaLow module from Azurewave can enable engineers to design smaller and energy-efficient IoT products.
AzureWave Technologies has released the world’s smallest WiFi HaLow module powered by Morse Micro MM6108 microchip. The module measures just 13 x 13 mm and can deliver a 10x higher range compared to traditional Wi-Fi solutions. Moreover, it runs on lower energy and can deliver faster data than the existing solutions. This new WiFi HaLow module can enable engineers to design smaller and energy-efficient IoT products. Furthermore, the module can shorten the development process and time to market while providing a transmission range of up to 1kilometers which makes it suitable for use in IoT applications in large warehouses, smart buildings, smart farms, etc.
HaLow is a low, power long-range Wi-Fi standard that works in 900 MHz, it is based on IEEE 802.11ah standard. WiFi Certified HaLow was developed for use in smart building applications, like smart lighting, smart HVAC, smart security systems, connected cars, smart cities and other low-power applications. The lower frequency of this standard enables it to penetrate better through walls and obstructions when compared to 802.11ad (which operates in the 60 GHz band). Moreover, when compared to conventional Wi-Fi (802.11 a/b/g/n) that operates in the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz band it consumes lower power and has a longer range.
The module is based on Morse Micro MM6108 SoC which is a single-chip solution, including Radio, PHY, and MAC sections designed in accordance with the IEEE 802.11ah standard, supporting data rates up to 32.5 Mbps. The RF interface for the MM6108 includes the option to use either the on-chip amplification for typical low-power, low-cost devices or in conjunction with an external PCB-mount power amplifier (PA) or Front-End Module (FEM) for ultra-long-reach applications.
“Wi-Fi HaLow continues to gain momentum in the IoT ecosystem, and our collaboration with AzureWave builds on this energy as we scale and accelerate the deployment of Wi-Fi HaLow solutions worldwide,” said Michael De Nil, co-founder, and chief executive officer at Morse Micro. “By joining forces, Morse Micro and AzureWave are poised to design and deliver best-in-class Wi-Fi HaLow solutions that will enrich existing communication modules in a broad range of IoT and consumer electronics applications.”
