A Japanese startup is building homes with ceiling-mounted robotic arms that could handle chores, from folding laundry to sorting groceries, autonomously inside ordinary family homes.

Japanese startup MW is developing MW Living Home, a residential concept that integrates AI, robotics and architecture to automate routine household chores. Instead of relying on mobile humanoid robots moving around furniture, the system places robotic arms on ceiling-mounted rails, giving them access to key areas while keeping floor space clear.
The approach is designed around the home itself. MW is developing its architecture, software and robotic hardware together, allowing the living space to be designed specifically for autonomous machines. Its MW bot system can move along ceiling and wall rails and is intended to handle tasks such as carrying items, folding laundry, sorting belongings and putting groceries away.
A demonstration in Tokyo showed the concept handling everyday tasks, including identifying groceries and moving items to appropriate storage locations. The company has also demonstrated an arm retrieving a towel from a dryer and folding it, although more complex tasks such as folding a T-shirt remain challenging.
The ceiling-mounted design addresses several limitations facing conventional humanoid robots. Domestic environments are crowded with furniture, pets and people, leaving limited room for bulky two-legged machines to navigate safely. Rails could provide robots with a more predictable route while allowing humans to use the floor normally.
MW’s broader vision is to make the house an intelligent physical system rather than simply a collection of connected appliances. Sensors would provide environmental awareness, AI would interpret situations, and robotic hardware would carry out physical tasks.
The company is targeting fully functional robot-equipped homes as it develops the technology. Its challenge now is proving that these systems can work reliably, safely and economically in real homes — not just controlled demonstrations.
