Murata Manufacturing Co. Ltd has introduced Radisol, a product that reduces interference among closely situated antennas while maintaining low insertion loss, thereby enhancing both isolation and radiation efficiency. This technology is tailored to accommodate the design of devices such as smartphones and wearables. It offers advantages, including lower power consumption, smaller size, and improved communication quality.

The demand for smaller smartphones and wearables has increased the number of antennas to support a broad spectrum of communication methods and bands. This increase, coupled with the adoption of MIMO technology and designs like foldable phones, has heightened the challenges related to antenna isolation and effectiveness due to interference, leading to diminished radiation efficiency.

Traditional discrete filters, used to enhance antenna isolation, fall short in scenarios where communication bands are in close proximity due to their insertion loss and space requirements. In response, Murata has developed Radisol using its ceramic multilayer technology and RF circuit design expertise, offering a filtering solution that occupies minimal board space.

Radisol simplifies the setups typically required by antenna engineers who use discrete L and C chip components for filtering. It is a compact, single 0603-sized component that curbs antenna interference without affecting the passband, improving radiation efficiency and reducing power consumption.

Each Radisol component is a filter circuit designed to address interference in specific communication bands. The design features a single-chip solution combining one capacitor and two inductors, creating band-stop filter characteristics through mutual inductance between two coupled coils. This design provides effective antenna isolation with minimal insertion loss, thus enhancing overall performance, efficiency, and system integration.

Radisol is available in several variants to cater to commonly used bands like 2G and 5G Wi-Fi and GPS. It eliminates the need for separate filter circuit designs and simplifies the implementation of countermeasures. Murata plans to expand this product line to continue meeting market needs and advance further in antenna technology.
