Silicon Labs and Arduino collaborate to streamline IoT development, offering new software libraries and development boards for faster, simpler Matter over Thread applications.
Silicon Labs, a wireless technology provider, has partnered with Arduino, a leader in open-source hardware and software, to enhance the development of Matter over Thread applications for Arduino’s community of 33 million developers. As a result of this collaboration, Arduino has released its first Matter software libraries, which are now available on both the xG24 Explorer Kit from Silicon Labs and the xG24-based SparkFun Thing Plus Matter – MGM240P development board.
Arduino’s software resources are adequate, offering pre-compiled libraries that enable developers to set up new devices quickly. In tests, Silicon Labs engineers were able to prepare a new board as a Matter device and ready it for commissioning into a network in less than two minutes, enhancing the accessibility, simplicity, and speed of Matter development.
A complete platform for Matter development requires hardware and software. In Phase Two of their collaboration, Arduino and Silicon Labs are jointly developing a new addition to the Arduino Nano family of development boards for small form factor devices. This new board will feature the MGM240 Module from Silicon Labs, based on the MG24 SoC, offering wireless connectivity using Matter, Thread, and Bluetooth protocols. The module includes features such as an ARM Cortex-M33, ten dBm output power, low current consumption, and PSA Certification Level 3 security, enabling developers to create applications that protect end-user privacy. The module provides the necessary resources and expandability for Matter development with up to 1536 kB of Flash, 256 kB of RAM, and 32 GPIO.
This partnership aligns with Silicon Labs’ objective of simplifying IoT development. To achieve this, Silicon Labs is collaborating with development tool providers like Arduino and enhancing its tools. Advancement is the upcoming release of Simplicity Studio 6. This new version will enable developers to integrate their preferred IDEs and program devices in their chosen environment and language. This approach demonstrates Silicon Labs’ commitment to easing the development process from internal and external perspectives.
