Littelfuse has launched the 5.0SMDJ-FB TVS Diode Series, a 5000 W surface-mount solution designed to protect sensitive DC power lines against overvoltage transients. The new series supports integration into space-constrained industrial, data center, and ICT environments by using the standard DO-214AB (SMC) footprint.

The 5.0SMDJ-FB Series introduces foldback technology that reduces clamping voltage by up to 15% without affecting protection stability. It also ensures a Breakdown Voltage (VBR) higher than the Reverse Standoff Voltage (VR), helping to protect critical downstream components like advanced DC/DC converters as power supplies grow more compact.

Rated for 5000 W peak pulse power, the series can endure severe electrical conditions and serve as a drop-in replacement for the existing 5.0SMDJ Series, making it easier for engineers to upgrade protection without redesigning the PCB layout.

Target applications include Power over Ethernet (PoE) systems, AI and data center servers, ICT power supplies, and industrial DC power distribution. As electronics continue to shrink and push performance limits, Littelfuse’s new diode series gives engineers a robust, compact solution for evolving transient protection challenges.

Some of the key features of the 5.0SMDJ-FB TVS Diode Series include:

  • Uses foldback technology to lower clamping voltage by up to 15%
  • Keeps breakdown voltage higher than working voltage for stable protection
  • Can handle up to 5000 W during power surges
  • Comes in a small surface-mount package
  • Fits in the same place as older 5.0SMDJ parts
  • Works well with new, compact power systems like DC/DC converters

“The 5.0SMDJ-FB Series addresses a critical design challenge: how to safeguard increasingly sensitive DC/DC converters and other power supply components from destructive transient surges,” said Jenny Chen, Product Manager, Protection Semiconductor Business Unit at Littelfuse. “By achieving up to 15% lower clamping voltage for the same standoff voltage, our foldback technology enhances circuit protection performance in high-reliability applications like data centers and industrial systems.”
