A major update to a popular hardware-agnostic embedded Linux platform brings enhanced cybersecurity, long-term support, and seamless updates, helping OEMs deliver smarter, future-proof devices while simplifying regulatory compliance and reducing development complexity.

SECO S.p.A. has announced the launch of Clea OS v2.0, a major upgrade to its Yocto-based, hardware-agnostic embedded operating system. Now the default Linux distribution for all new SECO hardware, Clea OS 2.0 is designed to power next-generation smart devices across both Arm and x86 platforms. The new release provides a unified software foundation that supports the entire product lifecycle, enabling services such as remote OS and application updates, AI workload optimization, enhanced security, and integrated payments.
By reducing complexity and ensuring compliance with emerging regulations, the OS helps Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) deliver innovative services faster while lowering costs and risks. A key highlight is its cybersecurity focus. With escalating threats ranging from insecure communications to data breaches, the system introduces features that align with upcoming frameworks like the EU Cyber Resilience Act (CRA) and the Radio Equipment Directive (RED). OEMs gain access to automated Software Bill of Materials (SBOM) generation, vulnerability management, and regular patching—critical steps for regulatory compliance.
The key features are:
- Long-Term Support (LTS) with quarterly updates and CVE patching
- Enhanced cybersecurity with vulnerability management and AI-driven monitoring
- Remote OS and application updates for edge devices
- Regulatory compliance-ready for frameworks like EU Cyber Resilience Act (CRA) and RED
- Flexible development: full support framework or independent OS lifecycle management
Through a partnership with Exein, SECO also offers premium AI-driven monitoring and device protection. Looking ahead, the company will introduce a Long-Term Support (LTS) model, ensuring quarterly updates that include new features, bug fixes, and CVE patches. All updates are delivered via a CI/CD pipeline, complete with transparent release notes. Customers can choose between leveraging the company’s full support framework or independently managing integration and lifecycle updates.

Clea OS 2.0 will be rolled out as a direct update for all SECO hardware under active maintenance. It can also be tested in a QEMU-emulated environment, while professional porting services are available for legacy SECO or third-party devices.
“With Clea OS 2.0, we are fundamentally lowering the barrier for OEMs to build and maintain secure, future-proof devices,” said Marco Sogli, Head of Software at SECO. “By delivering a cyber-resilient, regularly updated OS for free, we allow our customers to focus on core applications and accelerate time-to-market.”
