Transient Filter Strengthens Military Power Systems

A rugged half-brick filter combines high-energy transient protection and EMI attenuation to simplify power protection in demanding aerospace and defence platforms.

Transient Filter Strengthens Military Power Systems

SynQor has expanded its Military COTS (MCOTS) power portfolio with the MCOTS-F-28-T-HE, a transient filter designed to protect 28V military power systems from high-energy voltage disturbances while simplifying integration with downstream power converters. The half-brick module is intended for defence and aerospace platforms where power buses can experience switching transients, surges, spikes and other events that can affect sensitive electronics.

The filter supports a continuous input range of -40Vdc to +40Vdc and can withstand transients up to 210Vdc. It delivers up to 600W or 40A continuously, allowing it to support higher-power 28V architectures without requiring a custom protection stage. The module can also continue operating after startup down to an input voltage of 5.8Vdc, helping maintain downstream power availability during severe bus-voltage disturbances.

For military and aerospace designers,it combines transient protection with EMI filtering in a compact, rugged package. Its input buck stage limits the output to below 50Vdc during spikes and surges, while built-in surge, spike and reverse-polarity protection helps shield connected electronics. The module also incorporates an inrush-current limiting function and a low-power standby mode, reducing stress on the source during startup and minimising quiescent power consumption.

The filter is suited to ground, naval and airborne military platforms, as well as other mission-critical systems requiring controlled power quality. It can be paired with MCOTS DC-DC converters to help designers address requirements associated with standards including MIL-STD-461, MIL-STD-704, MIL-STD-1275 B/D, MIL-STD-810G, DO-160E and DEF-STAN 61-5. This pre-qualified approach can reduce the development, testing and qualification effort associated with developing a dedicated transient protection circuit.

The key features are:

  • Half-brick package for compact power-system integration
  • Up to 210Vdc transient withstand capability
  • 600W continuous power capability
  • Output clamping below 50Vdc during spikes and surges
  • Supports operation down to 5.8Vdc after startup
  • Designed for integration with MCOTS DC-DC converters

It therefore provides a ready-to-integrate approach to transient and EMI protection for 28V power architectures, helping engineers address demanding power-quality requirements while reducing reliance on bespoke filtering solutions. The source document identifies the product as a qualified, off-the-shelf filtering option within the MCOTS family.
