High-Reliability Polymer Capacitors

A next-generation line of polymer capacitors is redefining power performance for mission-critical aerospace and military systems — delivering ultra-low ESR, extended endurance at high temperatures, and rugged mechanical reliability designed to thrive where failure isn’t an option.

Polymer Capacitors

Vishay Intertechnology is taking a decisive leap in high-reliability power components with the launch of its DLA 04051 series — a new family of vPolyTan™ polymer surface-mount chip capacitors engineered for the rigorous demands of aerospace, military, and space (AMS) systems.

The new capacitors are qualified to the latest Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) 04051 standard, putting them squarely in line with the U.S. military’s stringent reliability requirements. What sets the DLA 04051 apart is its ultra-low equivalent series resistance (ESR) — dipping to just 25 mΩ, a dramatic improvement over traditional tantalum capacitors. That means cleaner, faster, and more stable power delivery for mission-critical electronics, from avionics and radar systems to transponders and satellite payloads.

The key features are:

  • Extremely low ESR for superior efficiency
  • Tin/lead (SnPb) terminations for proven solder reliability
  • High-reliability manufacturing and screening processes, including:

The engineering team has packed serious performance into a small footprint. The capacitors span a capacitance range of 4.7 μF to 680 μF, with voltage ratings up to 63 V, catering to a wide variety of power architectures. And reliability isn’t just a claim — each unit is validated through 2000 hours of endurance testing at 125 °C, ensuring it can survive the harshest operating environments.

Mechanically, the DLA 04051 series is built to endure abuse. The devices withstand shock up to 500 g, comply with MIL-STD-202-204 Level D vibration tests, and handle thermal cycling per MIL-STD-202-107 — making them as rugged as the aircraft and spacecraft they’re built for. Beyond performance, this move also brings strategic value to defense contractors: the DLA 04051 line provides a true second source to Yageo/Kemet equivalents, helping reduce supply risk in programs that can’t afford downtime. Samples and production quantities are already available, with lead times around 35 weeks — a standard window for DLA-qualified components.
