Can vehicles become faster, more efficient, and safer while using locally designed and manufactured components?
ROHM India explains their journey in creating advanced power electronics and EV modules for the Indian market.
ROHM is a Japanese company founded in 1954 in Kyoto, which has developed a strong reputation worldwide in power electronics and analog devices. ROHM began its operations in India in 2011, marking over 10 years of operation in the country. In addition to sales and marketing, ROHM India has a design centre that specialises in the development of LSIs (Large-Scale Integration circuits) and power MOSFETs, with a special technical support team.
The R&D department of ROHM India develops components that suit the Indian market. This local strategy will enable ROHM to develop solutions that are directly tailored to the needs of domestic customers, while also contributing to global product innovation.
Expansion in India
Since its establishment, ROHM India has specialized in LSI design and analogue ICs in complex applications like fuel injection systems with notable design wins. The company entered the power MOSFETs market some four to five years ago, especially in two-wheeler electric vehicles.
In the near future, ROHM will introduce a completely Made in India MOSFET for motor and battery management systems, marking a milestone in local production. There are also discussions on the backend assembly processes to enhance ROHM’s manufacturing presence in India.
The design in India strategy enables the engineers of ROHM to collaborate with customers on a close basis and offer a wide range of technical support in the form of Field Application Engineers (FAEs). Engineers usually go to the customer locations to make sure that the components are best integrated to enhance the performance and reliability of the product.
Focus on Power, Energy, and AI
As AI data centres and energy requirements grow, ROHM is investing in new technologies, including silicon carbide (SiC) and gallium nitride (GaN). These solutions allow high-voltage, highly efficient devices, which do not require very high currents and are suitable for AI computing applications. Although the demand is mainly international, the interest in India is increasing.
Automotive Applications Innovation
ROHM has been a robust competitor in the automotive industry. One of the recent releases is the DOT 247 module, a small, discrete module that is a combination of two devices. This is a space-saving module that can be used in high-power applications, thus it can be used in automobiles, especially in four-wheelers and other large vehicles. Although SiC technology is mainly aimed at larger cars, it is assisting ROHM to provide greater efficiency and reliability in automotive power systems.
The automotive segments are strong in demand and both the two-wheelers and four-wheelers are performing well. Energy applications like UPS systems, PV inverters, and data centres also present a lot of opportunities to ROHM. The Make in India program is a strategic chance that ROHM can use to provide locally produced parts to OEMs and final product firms with the help of increasing EMS (Electronics Manufacturing Services) activity.
Product Demonstrations and Innovations
| ROHM presents a broad product range, including discrete products and high-end silicon carbide wafers in 4, 6, and 8-inch formats. Special innovations are top-side cooling packages to achieve high thermal efficiency, and power modules, including TRC Drive, TLC Drive, H-Strip, and the DOT 247, which are designed and tested locally to fit OEM motor inverters and battery management systems. Also, ROHM India is working on two-wheeler lighting control solutions such as LED headlamps, DRLs, tail lamps, and indicators and artificial bus sound (ABS) systems to improve EV pedestrian safety. A 100 V MOSFET developed at the Pune centre will be manufactured locally and will be optimised to work with two-wheeler EVs, with the first batch of production likely to be ready by the end of the month. |
With a strong momentum in the EV segment and energy applications, ROHM India continues to enjoy the benefits of local design and manufacturing, enabling it to meet both local and international demand. Innovation, teamwork, and quality will enable ROHM India to strengthen its presence and influence in the rapidly evolving electronics and automotive sectors.
