Developed in collaboration with Intel, the module is built for compatibility with Intel Xeon 6 SoC based server platforms. It integrates into existing systems to support low latency synchronization, which is critical for distributed AI workloads and real time network operations.

At a system level, the module supports multiple timing sources, including Global Navigation Satellite Systems, Synchronous Ethernet, and Precision Time Protocol. It can automatically select and lock onto available sources, enabling consistent timing performance even during network changes or signal disruptions.

The design combines several timing components into a single module, including a SyncE synthesizer with dual digital phase locked loops, oven controlled crystal oscillators for holdover stability, and onboard monitoring elements such as temperature sensing and memory for configuration. Two variants are available, offering holdover performance of up to four or eight hours, maintaining timing accuracy during temporary signal loss.

By consolidating these functions, the module reduces the need for custom timing circuit design within servers and network equipment. Its plug-in format allows integration at different stages of system development, from initial design to later upgrades, while also simplifying maintenance and replacement.

“Timing is the invisible force that guides the world’s most transformative technologies. With the MD-990-0011-B timing modules, Microchip enables designers to address timing requirements proactively, whether at the outset or during upgrades,” says Randy Brudzinski, corporate vice president of Microchip’s frequency and time systems business unit.

“By simplifying timing integration and enhancing reliability on Intel Xeon 6 SoC-powered platforms, we are helping customers accelerate deployment,” adds Mike Merluzzi, GM of radio access networks at Intel.
