Vishay Intertechnology has added four devices to its IHXL series of radial through-hole inductors for high-current power applications with lower core losses, thermal performance, and lower cost compared to earlier generations.

The additions — the automotive-grade IHXL1500VZ-3A and IHXL2000VZ-3A, along with the commercial IHXL1500VZ-31 and IHXL2000VZ-31 — use an iron alloy core material that cuts core losses by 20% while reducing temperature rise during operation. The inductors support operating temperatures up to +155 °C and are designed for filtering applications handling currents up to 209 A.

The devices are aimed at applications such as high-current input filters, DC/DC converters, DC-Link filters, battery charging systems, and brushless DC motors (BLDC). Vishay Intertechnology is also positioning the inductors for differential mode and boost power factor correction (PFC) choke applications across automotive, industrial, renewable energy, and power conversion systems.

Compared to previous IHXL series inductors, the devices offer inductance values up to 10 µH while being available at a lower price point. The higher inductance enables impedance and ripple current control in switching converters, helping filtering efficiency in high-power designs.

All four inductors feature a magnetically shielded construction using a pressed powdered iron body that helps contain stray magnetic flux. This reduces coupling with nearby components and improves electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) performance compared to wirewound inductors with exposed coils.

The powdered iron construction also contributes to lower internal thermal resistance, helping minimize hotspots and improve heat dissipation. Vishay Intertechnology has additionally designed the parts with a flat top surface to simplify the mounting of external heatsinks in thermally demanding applications.

The IHXL1500VZ-3A, IHXL1500VZ-31, IHXL2000VZ-3A, and IHXL2000VZ-31 are RoHS-compliant, halogen-free, and Vishay Green compliant. Vishay Intertechnology said the devices are resistant to thermal shock, moisture, and mechanical shock, and can also be customized with different termination styles, inductance values, current ratings, temperature ratings, and voltage ratings.
