Automotive Resistors Gain Higher Power Ratings

Can chip resistors handle more power without occupying extra PCB space? An automotive-grade series aims to make it possible.

Stackpole Automotive Grade Chip Resistors Deliver Higher Power Density

Stackpole Electronics has expanded its RMCA Series of automotive-grade chip resistors with high-power (-HP) and ultra-high-power (-UP) variants. The additions are designed to help engineers increase power handling in automotive and other high-reliability applications without moving to larger resistor package sizes or relying on more expensive established-reliability components.

The new variants address a common design challenge of balancing higher power requirements with limited PCB space. By delivering greater power density within the same package size, the resistors help reduce component count, conserve board area and improve thermal performance. This makes them suitable for compact designs where long-term reliability and efficient heat dissipation are essential.

Designed for automotive, industrial, transportation and power management applications, the resistors provide additional design margin for current sensing, voltage division, biasing and general-purpose circuit protection. The series is manufactured using automotive-grade materials and processes, while sulfur-resistant inner terminations help improve reliability in harsh operating environments.

The thick-film resistors are available in both -HP and -UP options and are qualified to the AEC-Q200 automotive reliability standard. They are also anti-sulphur, RoHS compliant, REACH compliant and halogen free, making them suitable for applications requiring long service life, stable electrical performance and compliance with automotive and industrial requirements.
