Can edge AI cameras operate farther from the processor? A signal repeater can extend rugged camera links without changing system architecture.

oToBrite has introduced a GMSL2 repeater designed to extend the connection between cameras and compute units in edge AI systems used on autonomous vehicles, robots and off-highway machinery. The device doubles the typical reach of a GMSL2 camera link from around 15 metres to 30 metres, helping system designers place cameras farther from the processor without relocating the compute unit or redesigning the cable layout.
Large autonomous machines often mount cameras at locations such as trailer rears, boom arms, harvesting heads and vehicle perimeters, where conventional GMSL2 links may not provide sufficient range. By regenerating the incoming signal rather than simply amplifying it, the repeater restores signal integrity and retransmits a clean data stream over a second link, enabling longer cable runs while maintaining system performance.
The inline device supports data rates of up to 6Gbps and adds less than one microsecond of latency. It features one GMSL2 input and one output using FAKRA Type Z connectors and operates using Power over Coax, eliminating the need for a separate power supply. According to the company, a single repeater was validated over a 30-metre connection for 24 hours without frame loss.
Designed for outdoor deployment, the repeater measures 34.6 x 36 x 19mm and operates over a temperature range of -40°C to 85°C. It carries an IP69K ingress protection rating when connected to an IP69K-rated FAKRA cable and consumes up to 1.3W, excluding camera power. The device is intended for applications including construction, mining, agriculture, forestry equipment, autonomous mobile robots, unmanned ground vehicles and long-haul trucks.
