A pocket-sized LoRa communicator with a built-in keyboard lets users send messages and share locations without relying on mobile network coverage.

Elecrow has launched the ThinkNode M9, a standalone communication terminal that runs MeshCore firmware over a Long Range (LoRa) radio link. The device supports text messaging, position sharing and navigation without requiring a mobile network connection or a paired smartphone.
The ThinkNode M9 is built around Espressif’s ESP32-S3R8 SoC, paired with a Semtech LR1110 LoRa transceiver supporting the 868 MHz European and 915 MHz United States frequency bands. The ESP32-S3 also provides Wi-Fi 4 and Bluetooth Low Energy 5.0 connectivity alongside the LoRa link. Users interact with the device through a 2.4-inch, 320 × 240-pixel TFT LCD and a 37-key physical QWERTY keyboard. A built-in GPS receiver supports GLONASS, Galileo and BeiDou satellite constellations for navigation and location sharing, while a magnetic compass provides directional information. The device is powered by a 2,300 mAh lithium-polymer battery, rated for two to three days of standby use.
Compared with earlier LoRa communicators such as Elecrow’s ThinkNode M1 and M2, which use Meshtastic firmware and rely on a Bluetooth-connected smartphone for message input, the ThinkNode M9 operates independently. Its built-in keyboard allows users to compose messages directly on the device, without needing a separate smartphone.
The device is part of a growing category of standalone LoRa messengers that includes the LILYGO T-Deck series. Elecrow positions the M9 for outdoor exploration, disaster and emergency communication, remote fieldwork, scientific research and offline community messaging. The device was introduced shortly after Makerfabs’ Nomad Terminal, another standalone LoRa communication device that uses a 3.5-inch touchscreen and LR1121 transceiver instead of a physical keyboard.
The ThinkNode M9 ships with MeshCore firmware pre-installed, according to Elecrow. Support for the device was added to the official MeshCore web flasher shortly before the product was listed, while no public source-code repository or wiki page for the M9 hardware was available at the time of writing. The underlying ESP32-S3 can also be programmed using C, C++ or MicroPython through the ESP-IDF and Arduino development environments.
The ThinkNode M9 is listed on Elecrow’s online store for $74.90, with 868 MHz and 915 MHz variants available. Elecrow lists outdoor exploration, disaster and emergency communication, remote fieldwork, scientific research and offline community messaging among the device’s intended applications. The appropriate frequency variant depends on the radio regulations applicable in the intended market.
