Huawei has introduced the Kirin 9050 Pro chip with the launch of its HUAWEI Mate XT 2 | ULTIMATE DESIGN tri-fold smartphone. The chip combines a LinxiCore CPU, Maleoon GPU, and Huawei Da Vinci Architecture NPU for computing, graphics, and on-device AI workloads.

Huawei says overall device performance improves by 42% compared with the previous generation through coordination across hardware, software, chip, and cloud systems.

The LinxiCore CPU works with Huawei’s Ark Engine to improve large-file loading and multitasking. The Maleoon GPU has twice the computing units and cache compared with the previous generation. It also supports hardware-level real-time ray tracing at up to 50 MRPS for gaming.

For AI workloads, the Kirin 9050 Pro uses Huawei’s Da Vinci Architecture NPU. The chip can run large AI models on the device and natively supports Huawei’s Pangu 30B-A2B Mixture-of-Experts large language model. This enables features such as AI-based album management through Huawei’s Celia assistant.

The chip is also paired with a thermal architecture designed for the tri-fold smartphone. Heat sources are distributed across the phone’s three frames, while large vapour chambers and graphene materials help transfer heat away from the components.

Connectivity is handled through multiple communication systems and 32 distributed antennas. The smartphone also supports Tiantong satellite communication and Beidou satellite messaging.

The Kirin 9050 Pro is also associated with Huawei’s LogicFolding architecture and Tau (τ) Scaling Law. These technologies are part of Huawei’s approach to semiconductor design and scaling. The Mate XT 2 serves as the first commercial smartphone platform for this technology.

Huawei has paired the processor with a separate security chip and Mobile Security Processor. The system supports post-quantum cryptography algorithm detection and has received EAL5+ CCRC security certification.

The Kirin 9050 Pro debuts in the HUAWEI Mate XT 2 | ULTIMATE DESIGN, which uses a wing-like tri-fold design and runs HarmonyOS 7. The phone also introduces features such as the Xuanwu Ultra-Durable Tri-Fold Architecture, Smart Shield Privacy Screen, and True-to-Color Camera 3.0.
