A new bidirectional transient suppressor series combines an 11 kW pulse rating with near-1.0 clamping ratio for automotive and industrial power protection.

Vishay Intertechnology has introduced the XFD11KxxCA series of bidirectional XClampR flat-clamping transient voltage suppressors (TVS), designed to provide high surge-handling capability with lower clamping voltage in a surface-mount DO-218AC package.
The 15-device series is available in both commercial-grade and AEC-Q101 qualified versions, with stand-off voltages ranging from 33 V to 85 V. This range allows the devices to address 12 V, 24 V, and 48 V automotive power systems. Maximum clamping voltage ranges from 40.6 V to 104.0 V, while breakdown voltage spans 36.7 V to 104 V.
A key characteristic of the XFD11KxxCA series is its clamping ratio (VC/VBR) close to 1.0. Compared with conventional TVS devices using compatible DO-218 packages, the suppressors provide lower clamping voltage at the same stand-off voltage while supporting approximately 1.6 times higher peak pulse current, reaching 207.1 A at 10/1000 µs.

The devices are rated for 11 kW peak pulse power dissipation at 10/1000 µs and can handle up to 2140 A at 8/20 µs. Their low dynamic resistance contributes to flat clamping during surge events, while a maximum leakage current of 10 µA at stand-off voltage helps limit power losses.
Stable clamping and breakdown characteristics are maintained from -55°C to +175°C. The low clamping voltage can also allow designers to use lower-voltage-rated MOSFETs, capacitors and other downstream components, potentially reducing component costs and voltage guard bands.
The TVS devices are intended to protect electronics from transients caused by inductive load switching and lightning. Automotive applications include ADAS and autonomous driving control units, on-board chargers, DC/DC converters, traction inverters, battery management systems, body control modules, camera systems and radar power supplies. Other applications include energy storage, servo motors, EPS, industrial automation, AI and server hot-swap power, telecom supplies and T-Box DC/DC conversion.
